"R. E. M. Beauty Hypernova Satin Matte Bronzer Shades: Out of Office & Send to Voicemail I recently purchased two shades of the R. E. M. Beauty Hypernova Satin Matte Bronzer—Out of Office and Send to Voicemail—and I have fairly mixed feelings overall. First, I want to start with the positives. The shade depiction on the packaging is actually quite accurate compared to the shade in the pan. The formula itself is genuinely beautiful: smooth, finely milled, easy to blend, and very buildable. It almost feels like it could double as an eyeshadow, which I love. The finish is soft and satin-matte, never chalky or patchy. The packaging, while objectively a little on the cheaper side (as with most R. E. M. Beauty products), works well here. For a bronzer, I don’t feel like luxury packaging is essential, and the compact feels practical, lightweight, and aesthetically pleasing enough. I wouldn’t want or need anything more elaborate for this type of product. Shade: Out of Office Out of Office is a really lovely bronzer shade. It leans reddy–orangey, but in a way that still reads natural and flattering on the skin. On me, it works best when I’m fake-tanned or when I want a slightly stronger bronzed look. While it is a touch darker than my ideal everyday bronzer, it’s absolutely wearable and performs beautifully. If you like warmth in your bronzer, this shade delivers. Shade: Send to Voicemail This is where my main criticism lies. Send to Voicemail is extremely, extremely fair to the point where, in my opinion, it barely functions as a bronzer at all. On my fair (but not ultra-fair) complexion, it looks more like a setting powder than a bronzing product. Even when heavily layered, it simply does not provide the bronzing effect that Out of Office does. The issue isn’t that it’s unusable it is workable but it lacks any real bronzing impact. You would need to be very fair and someone who prefers extremely natural makeup to make this shade function as a bronzer. Otherwise, it just disappears into the skin. What’s especially frustrating is the huge shade gap between Send to Voicemail and Out of Office. There is absolutely a missing shade in between. For someone like me fair, but not porcelain there is no true “everyday” bronzer option in this range. One shade is too light to bronze, and the next is noticeably darker. In my opinion, Send to Voicemail isn’t really a bronzer at all. That leaves Out of Office as the only viable option, which, while beautiful, is darker than ideal for everyday wear. Realistically, when purchasing makeup, you don’t want products that you have to make work you want them to simply work. This makes the shade range particularly disappointing given how excellent the formula itself is. To highlight this, I included a swatch comparison with Lancôme Bronzer in Shade 02 on the far left. Compared side-by-side, Send to Voicemail barely registers as a bronzer at all. Honestly, if returning it were easier, I probably would have, simply because I can’t realistically see myself reaching for it as a bronzer. This is especially disappointing because I’ve loved R. E. M. Beauty’s blushes in the past and can tell the quality of this formula is there. Additional Consideration (Australian Customers) It’s also worth mentioning that purchasing R. E. M. Beauty from Australia comes with very expensive shipping, which can be around $50 AUD. Even when buying these bronzers during a Black Friday sale, the shipping cost is significant. When you’re paying that much just to get the product, receiving a shade that isn’t truly usable as a bronzer makes the experience far more disappointing. It does make me hesitant to purchase more from the brand, despite genuinely liking the formulas, simply due to the cost and risk involved. Final Thoughts The Hypernova Satin Matte Bronzer has a beautiful formula and solid packaging, but the shade range specifically the inclusion of Send to Voicemail as a bronzer is a major flaw. The shades also appear noticeably darker online than they do in person, which is important to note. If R. E. M. Beauty were to introduce a shade between Send to Voicemail and Out of Office, the entire bronzer range would be significantly stronger and far more accessible for fair-to-light skin tones.
